29 Faces Day 8

For today's face I thought I would have another go at using oil pastels. It is not a medium I am used too so  I found it difficult to get a result I was happy with.

I know her eyes need more work but the pastels are so chunky that, at this size,  it is hard to be so precise in applying the pastel and I was afraid of spoiling her altogether

The pastels I have are only a cheap set. I know that the more expensive oil pastels are more creamy and easier to work with but I think I need more practice before I consider investing in a more expensive set.

I think she looks like a sad ballerina.

If  anyone is used to working in oil pastels I would welcome any tips.

Bye for now x

  1. You have done a great job, Iknow I do find oil pastels tricky. More expensive ones are as you say easier. Lynne Hoppe gives a great blog tutorial. take a peep!

  3. I have only used oil pastels a few times in mixed media work - (I'm glad Paper rainbow could help you!) She reminds me of a ballerina too! Lovely work!

  4. I haven't used oil pastels since I was in high school but they were a cheaper set and I can remember liking certain aspects of the medium and hating others-like how hard it was to put in details! I like the softness of her face and she is like a sad ballerina but I like her. Loving your faces and their expressiveness!

  6. Well, I like her! Even though she looks a bit sad .... Can't help you with the pastels I'm afraid. I only ever use them to scribble or for backgrounds, never for drawing ...

  7. You've captured a wonderfully wistful look on her face - and you seem to be very much at home with the oil pastels, . I'm impressed you are doing a face a day, I'd struggle at one a month!
